Chapter: 1, Faith (Kitab Al Iman)
Hadith No: 25 Narrated/Authority of Qatada
One of the delegates from the Abdul Qais tribe told him this tradition. Said said Qatada mentioned Abu Nadra’s name on the authority of Abu Said Khudri who told this tradition: People from the tribe of Abdul Qais came to the Messenger of Allah and said: Messenger of Allah, we belong to the tribe of Rabia. There are unbelievers from the Mudar tribe between you and us, and we can only come to you during the sacred months. Please direct us to a deed that we can tell those who are left behind us, so that we may enter heaven. The Messenger of Allah said: I command you to do four things and forbid you from doing four things. Worship Allah and don’t associate anyone with Him, establish prayer, pay Zakat, and observe the fast of Ramadan. Also, pay one fifth from the booty. And I prohibit you from using four things: dry gourds, green-colored jars, hollowed stumps of palm-trees, and receptacles. The members of the delegation asked: Do you know what al-naqir is? He replied: Yes, it is a stump that you hollow out and put small dates in. Said said: He (the Holy Prophet) used the word “tamar” (dates). Then you pour water over it, and when it stops bubbling, you drink it and become so intoxicated that someone among you, or someone from your tribe who is not present, will strike his cousin with a sword. The narrator said: There was a man among us who got injured because of this intoxication, and he tried to hide it from the Messenger of Allah out of shame. However, I asked the Messenger of Allah: If we don’t use the utensils you have forbidden us to use, what type of vessels should we use for drinking? He replied: Use waterskins that are tied with a string. They asked again: Prophet of Allah, our land has many rats, and water-skins can’t be protected. The holy Prophet of Allah said: Use water-skins even if they are nibbled by rats. And then he said to al-Ashajj of Abdul Qais: You have two qualities that Allah loves: insight and deliberateness.
