Hadith No 21 to 40

Hadith No: 21 Narrated/Authority of Tawus

A man asked Abdullah son of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) why he doesn’t go on a military expedition. Abdullah replied that he heard the messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) say that Islam is based on five pillars: believing in one God, praying, giving to the poor, fasting during Ramadan, and going on a pilgrimage to Mecca.

Hadith No: 22 Narrated/Authority of Ibn Abbas

A group from Abdul Qais met with the Messenger of Allah and said: Messenger of Allah, we are from the Rabi’a tribe. The unbelievers of Mudar are between us and you, and we can only come to you during the sacred month. Tell us what we should do and how we can invite our neighbors. The Prophet said: I command you to do four things and prohibit four acts. The four things you must do are: Believe in Allah, testify that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is his messenger, pray, and give Zakat. You must also give one-fifth of the booty you receive. I prohibit you from using round gourds, wine jars, wooden pots, or wine skins. Khalaf bin Hisham added: Testify that there is no god but Allah and he pointed out the oneness of the Lord with his finger.

Hadith No: 23 Narrated/Authority of Abu Jamra

I served as an interpreter for Ibn Abbas and the people. While I was there, a woman asked about nabidh, which is a pitcher of wine. Ibn Abbas replied that a delegation from the people of ‘Abdul-Qais had come to the Messenger of Allah. The Prophet asked the delegation about their identity. They said they were from the tribe of Rabi’a. The Prophet welcomed them and treated them with respect. The members of the delegation said, “Messenger of Allah, we come from a far distance, and there is a tribe of unbelievers between us and you. We can only come to you during the sacred months. Please give us clear guidance that we can share with others and that will help us enter heaven.” The Prophet replied, “I command you to do four things and forbid you from doing four things. First, believe in Allah alone. Do you understand what that means?” They replied, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” The Prophet explained, “It means believing that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His messenger. Second, establish prayer. Third, pay Zakat. Fourth, fast during Ramadan. Also, give one-fifth of the booty you receive. I forbid you from using gourds, wine jars, or any containers for wine.” Shu’ba sometimes used the word “naqir” (wooden pot) and sometimes used “muqayyar” to describe the forbidden containers. The Prophet also said, “Remember this and share it with those who were not present.”

Hadith No: 24 Narrated/Authority of Shuba

The Holy Prophet (may peace be upon him) said, “I forbid you to prepare nabidh in a gourd, hollowed block of wood, a varnished jar, or receptacle.” Ibn Muadh added this on the authority of his father. The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said to Ashajj, who was from the tribe of Abdul-Qais, “You possess two qualities that are liked by Allah: insight and deliberateness.”

Hadith No: 25 Narrated/Authority of Qatada

One of the delegates from the Abdul Qais tribe told him this tradition. Said said Qatada mentioned Abu Nadra’s name on the authority of Abu Said Khudri who told this tradition: People from the tribe of Abdul Qais came to the Messenger of Allah and said: Messenger of Allah, we belong to the tribe of Rabia. There are unbelievers from the Mudar tribe between you and us, and we can only come to you during the sacred months. Please direct us to a deed that we can tell those who are left behind us, so that we may enter heaven. The Messenger of Allah said: I command you to do four things and forbid you from doing four things. Worship Allah and don’t associate anyone with Him, establish prayer, pay Zakat, and observe the fast of Ramadan. Also, pay one fifth from the booty. And I prohibit you from using four things: dry gourds, green-colored jars, hollowed stumps of palm-trees, and receptacles. The members of the delegation asked: Do you know what al-naqir is? He replied: Yes, it is a stump that you hollow out and put small dates in. Said said: He (the Holy Prophet) used the word “tamar” (dates). Then you pour water over it, and when it stops bubbling, you drink it and become so intoxicated that someone among you, or someone from your tribe who is not present, will strike his cousin with a sword. The narrator said: There was a man among us who got injured because of this intoxication, and he tried to hide it from the Messenger of Allah out of shame. However, I asked the Messenger of Allah: If we don’t use the utensils you have forbidden us to use, what type of vessels should we use for drinking? He replied: Use waterskins that are tied with a string. They asked again: Prophet of Allah, our land has many rats, and water-skins can’t be protected. The holy Prophet of Allah said: Use water-skins even if they are nibbled by rats. And then he said to al-Ashajj of Abdul Qais: You have two qualities that Allah loves: insight and deliberateness.

Hadith No: 26 Narrated/Authority of Abu Said Al-Khudri

The delegation from the tribe of Abdul Qais asked the Prophet of Allah which beverage is good for them. They wanted to know if they should drink from wine jars. The Prophet told them not to drink from wine jars. They also asked if they should drink from al-naqir. The Prophet explained that al-naqir is a stump that is hollowed out in the middle. He told them not to use gourds or receptacles for drinking. Instead, they should use a water-skin with the mouth tied with a thong.

Hadith No: 27 Narrated/Authority of Ibn Abbas

The Messenger of Allah sent me to be a governor in Yemen. Before I left, he told me what to do. He said I would be in a community of people who follow the Book. So, I should first ask them to say there is only one god, Allah, and that Muhammad is his messenger. If they agree, I should tell them that Allah wants them to pray five times a day and night. If they agree to that, I should tell them that Allah wants them to give Zakat. Zakat is money that is taken from the rich and given to the poor. If they agree, I shouldn’t take the best things they own. I should also be careful because Allah listens to the prayers of the oppressed.

Hadith No: 28 Narrated/Authority of Ibn Abbas

When the Messenger of Allah sent Mu’adh to Yemen as governor, he told him to first teach the people of the Book about worshipping Allah. Once they understand this, Mu’adh should then instruct them that Allah has commanded them to pray five times a day. After they start praying, Mu’adh should inform them that they are required to give Zakat, which will be taken from the wealthy and given to the needy. Mu’adh should collect the Zakat from them and not take the best items from their wealth.

Hadith No: 29 Narrated/Authority of Abu Huraira

When the Messenger of Allah died and Abu Bakr became his successor, some Arabs who wanted to become apostates did so. Umar b. Khattab asked Abu Bakr why he would fight against these people. He reminded Abu Bakr that the Messenger of Allah had declared that he was directed to fight against people until they said “There is no god but Allah” and granted protection to those who professed it, except for a right. Abu Bakr responded by saying that he would definitely fight against those who didn’t give Zakat, because it is the obligation of the rich. He would even fight to secure the cord used for hobbling the feet of a camel, which used to be given as Zakat to the Messenger of Allah but was now being withheld. Umar b. Khattab agreed with Abu Bakr’s stance and recognized that he was right.

Hadith No: 30 Narrated/Authority of Abu Huraira

The Messenger of Allah said, “I have been commanded to fight against people until they declare that there is no god but Allah. Those who declare it will have their property and life protected by me, except for matters that are left to Allah.”

Hadith No: 31 Narrated/Authority of Abu Huraira

I heard the Messenger of Allah say, “I have been commanded to fight against people. They must testify that there is no god but Allah and believe that I am the messenger from the Lord. They must also believe in everything I have brought.” Once they do this, their blood and riches are protected by me, except when justified by law. Their affairs are in the hands of Allah.

Hadith No: 32 Narrated/Authority of Jabir

The Messenger of Allah said: I must fight people until they say there is only one god, Allah. When they say this, I will protect their lives and possessions, unless it goes against the law. Their matters will be decided by Allah. Then the Holy Prophet recited the verse: “You are not their guardian.”

Hadith No: 33 Narrated/Authority of Abdullah bin Umar

The Messenger of Allah said, “I must fight people until they declare that there is only one god, Allah, and that Muhammad is his messenger. They must also pray, give charity, and if they do these things, their lives and possessions are safe under my protection, unless the law says otherwise. Ultimately, Allah will judge their actions.”

His father told him that he heard the Apostle (may peace be upon him) say: Anyone who believes in the unity of Allah and then tells what was stated earlier.

Hadith No: 36 Narrated/Authority of Said ibn al-Musayyab

When Abu Talib was dying, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) visited him. Abu Jahl and Abdullah bin Abi Umayya were also present. The Messenger of Allah asked his uncle to declare that there is no god but Allah. Abu Jahl and Abdullah tried to convince Abu Talib to stick to the religion of Abdul-Muttalib. The Messenger of Allah persisted in asking him to accept his offer, while Abu Jahl and Abdullah kept repeating their statement. Eventually, Abu Talib made his final decision and refused to declare that there is no god but Allah. The Messenger of Allah promised to keep asking for forgiveness on his behalf until God forbade him from doing so. Allah then revealed a verse stating that the Prophet and the believers should not ask for forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they were their relatives. It was also revealed to the Messenger of Allah that he cannot guide those he loves to the right path, as Allah is the one who guides whom He wills.

Hadith No: 37 Narrated/Authority of Abu Huraira

The Messenger of Allah told his uncle when he was dying: Say that there is only one god, Allah, and I will say you are a Muslim on the Day of Judgment. But Abu Talib didn’t want to do it. Then Allah said: “You can’t make someone follow the right path just because you love them. Allah guides whoever he wants and knows who is guided.”

Hadith No: 38 Narrated/Authority of Abu Huraira

The Messenger of Allah told his uncle before he died: “Declare that there is only one god, Allah, and I will testify that you are a Muslim on the Day of Judgment.” Abu Talib responded: “If it weren’t for the fear of the Quraysh blaming me and saying that I only did it because of the fear of death, I would have made you very happy.” Then Allah revealed: “You cannot guide someone to the right path just because you love them. It is Allah who guides whom he chooses, and he knows best who is guided” (xxviii?56).

Hadith No: 39 Narrated/Authority of Uthman
