Sa’d said, “I swear by Allah, I will never kill a Muslim as long as someone like Usama does not kill.” Someone responded, “But didn’t Allah say to fight until there is no more mischief and religion is solely for Allah?” Sa’d replied, “We fought to stop mischief, but you and your companions want to fight to cause mischief.”

When they had gathered, Jundab arrived wearing a yellow hooded cloak. He said, “Let’s continue the conversation you were having.” They took turns talking until it was Jundab’s turn. He took off his hooded cloak and said, “I have come to tell you a hadith of your Apostle: The Messenger of Allah sent a group of Muslims to fight against a tribe of polytheists. The two armies faced each other. There was a man among the polytheists who was skilled at killing Muslims. There was also a Muslim waiting for an opportunity to strike him. We talked and realized that the man was Usama b. Zaid. When Usama raised his sword, the polytheist said, ‘There is no god but Allah,’ but Usama still killed him. When the messenger of good news came to the Prophet, he asked about the battle and Usama’s action. Usama explained that the polytheist had killed Muslims, and he killed him in return. The Prophet called Usama and asked him why he had killed the man. Usama replied, ‘Messenger of Allah, he struck and killed Muslims, including specific individuals.’ Usama continued, ‘When he saw my sword, he said, ‘There is no god but Allah.’ The Prophet asked, ‘Did you kill him?’ Usama answered yes. The Prophet asked, ‘What will you do when he says ‘There is no god but Allah’ on the Day of Judgment?’ Usama asked the Prophet to ask for forgiveness for him. The Prophet repeated, ‘What will you do when he says ‘There is no god but Allah’ on the Day of Judgment?’ He didn’t say anything more, but kept repeating the question.”
